RGS Statement on the UK Government's Scope of Surveillance Proposal

The UK Government’s proposal to extend the scope of its surveillance laws to other jurisdictions raises concerns about potential conflicts with the laws of other countries. Where the laws of one jurisdiction conflict with the laws of another, we look to governments to work together to resolve their conflicts.

We are evaluating the UK proposal carefully to ensure consistency with the established global norms of free expression and privacy. Our goal is to ensure that law enforcement and intelligence efforts avoid conflicts among governments and are rule-bound, narrowly tailored, and subject to oversight.
