WASHINGTON – The Reform Government Surveillance coalition (RGS) issued the following statement regarding New York's Electronic Communications Privacy Act:
"Reform Government Surveillance (RGS) supports the adoption of the New York Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) (A.2565/S.1531). The legislation establishes a comprehensive framework governing New York law enforcement's access to users' personal information, filling a critical legal gap in the 21st century. The legislation requires law enforcement to obtain search warrants to access transactional and content data—including sensitive location data—and sets a 90-day limit for non-disclosure orders, enhancing transparency and creating stronger protections for user data than outdated federal standards. We encourage the New York State Legislature to pass this bill."
